Sanken Full-Mold DC/DC Converter Module

Sanken Electric has announced the development of the MPM80 series of fully-molded step-down DC/DC converters, and the samples will be shipped from April this year at the price of 800 yen per unit (tax not included). Volume production is scheduled to start from May 2013 at 400,000 units per month and is expected to grow to 850,000 units per month by April 2014.
1. Development Background and Product Overview
Electronic equipment incorporating microcontrollers or LSIs operate at various DC voltages. DC/DC converters are being used as the power supply of these components.
DC/DC converters composed of an individual non-isolated step-down regulator IC, an inductor, and other components require considerable time for component selection, circuit design, and PC board pattern design. However, to the contrarily the development period of the electronic devices is getting shorter.
With this in mind, Sanken has developed the MPM80 series of DC/DC converter modules, which enables configuration of the DC/DC converters by using only a few external components*. They incorporate a non-isolated step-down DC/DC converter IC and an inductor in a small full-mold package equivalent to the TO220F package.
The MPM80 series DC/DC converter modules are highly efficient DC/DC converters that require a minimum number of the external components, and only the PCB space that a conventional three-terminal linear regulator IC requires.
*The adjustable output voltage type, MPM80 only requires a smoothing capacitor for the input & output, and the output voltage setting resistors.
The fixed output voltage type, MPM81 (output voltage = 3.3 V) and MPM82 (output voltage = 5.0 V) only requires a smoothing capacitor for each input and output.
Although the MPM80 series DC/DC converter modules are in a small package, equivalent to the TO220F, they can achieve an output current of 2.0A (1.5A without heat sink). This is achieved by employing a highly efficient synchronous rectification type of step-down regulator IC, and the high power dissipation full-mold structure to minimize power loss.
The use of this package allowed a 40% reduction in size of the module compared with other DC/DC converter modules with equivalent ratings.
