Sanken Develops IC for Driving LCD-TV LED Backlights
BL1615BA
With various dimming functions ideal for 3D TV backlight control

 

Sanken Electric today announced the development of the BL1615BA, an IC for driving the LED backlights used in LCD televisions. The BL1615BA is a sophisticated LED driver IC that features sixteen LED driver channels, each of which has a maximum withstand voltage of 60 V and a maximum sink current of 150mA. The BL1615BA also includes functions such as dimming and various kinds of protection.

3D televisions require more advanced image processing than 2D televisions, and the backlight in 3D televisions also requires more sophisticated control. The various functions provided by the BL1615BA enable this kind of fine-tuned backlight control.

Samples of the BL1615BA are available at a unit price of JPY 1000. Mass production is scheduled to begin in June of 2011 at an initial scale of 100,000 units per month, increasing to 1 million units per month in June of 2012.

   
1. Overview
 
- Includes 16 multifunction LED driver channels that can drive up to 192 LEDs.
- The driver channels feature a high withstand voltage and highly accurate constant current, enabling flexible LED driving with few external components.
- Includes a serial interface for communication with an image controller, which can control up to 30 BL1615BA ICs individually.
- Includes dimming (*1), scanning (*2), and current dimming (*3) functions that can be used to control LED driving on a channel by channel basis.
- Includes protection functions that detect an abnormality like open or shorted circuits in the LEDs or shorting in the resistors and output a fault signal.
- Includes a function to control the DC/DC converter so as to supply an appropriate voltage to the LED driving circuits.

*3. Current dimming: Backlight control technology used to adjust the LED brightness by changing the LED current value.
   
2. Features
  (1) Includes 16 driver channels with a high withstand voltage of 60 V and a constant LED
current of 150 mA
(2) The constant current value can be set for all channels collectively
(by using external resistors).
(3) The driving current can be increased by connecting driver channels in parallel.

(4) The DC/DC converter used to supply the LED power is attached externally,
reducing the number of external components required when using multiple driver ICs.
(5) Includes a serial interface supporting a logic level of 1.8 to 5 V.

(6) Includes an address function that enables up to 30 BL1615BA ICs to be controlled by
a single microcontroller.

(7) Includes various dimming control functions.
- Dimming: Backlight control technology used to adjust the LED ON time to suit the picture (4096 gradations).
- Scanning: Backlight control technology used to adjust the LED turn-on time to suit the picture.
- Current dimming: The drive current is adjusted for each channel (64 gradations).
- Collective dimming control is enabled by inputting an external PWM signal (when serial communication is not used.)
