Sanken Electric Co., Ltd. introduces the FULLBACK SCU501 Micro UPS (rated
output 500VA/300W), ideal for use by small offices/home offices with personal
computers. FULLBACK SCU501 features the industry's smallest, lightest design
of this class as well as a low price. Shipping starts September 16.
Employing a unique circuit design centered on a single-chip microprocessor,
the SCU501 is compact (70W x 164H x 248D mm), lightweight (3.9 kg), and
reasonably priced (suggested retail price 29,800 yen), which all combine
to make the device the best choice for personal and SOHO users.
Introduction of long-life batteries cuts battery maintenance and replacement
labor in half.
The SCU501 incorporates an RS-232C serial port for the first time in the
offline UPS market. This was previously available only on the constant inverter
or line interactive models. When used with its optional LanSafe III/FailSafe
III power management software run on a compatible OS (PC or UNIX), the serial
port provides auto shutdown, scheduling, and many other power management
functions. Applications range from the backup of multimedia projects to
PCs on corporate networks.

FULLBACK SCU501 Product Overview
|
| |
1.Features |
| |
- Industry's first low-price, compact, lightweight design:
The industry's first low-price, compact, and lightweight design
of this class has been achieved with Sanken's unique cost reduction
and mechanical design techniques. The footprint has also been
dramatically reduced.
- Long-life batteries:
Long-life (5-year) batteries are employed to extend the battery
replacement period from 2-3 years to 5-6 years.
- Battery self-diagnosis:
The UPS automatically diagnoses battery status and displays the
recommended battery replacement timing.
- Low-EMI output design:
The SCU501 is designed to minimize electromagnetic emissions that
would otherwise affect nearby electronic equipment. This makes
it safe for use in offices.
- Network compatible:
Equipped with an RS-232C serial port, the SCU501 can be used in
a wide variety of environments including network environments
when used with the optional power management software.
1) LanSafe III/FailSafe III power management software (sold separately)
enables scheduling of computer operations. Its GUI-based interface
enables easy system building.

4.Background |
| |
|
As personal computers come to be increasingly used in small offices
and homes, demand is growing for low-cost, easy-to-use UPS, particularly
from computer manufacturing and network-related industries.
Sanken's broad lineup, from 300VA to high-capacity UPS, has been expanded
with the FULLBACK SCU501 UPS, which incorporates renovated mechanical
and color designs and serves as the successor to an existing low-capacity
MPS Series UPS model.
The SCU501 features reasonable capacity, low price, easy use, and
compact design. It can be used with a wide range of devices including
routers, hubs, and other low-power networking devices.

1)Constant line feed type (offline type)
When commercially supplied power is normal, this type of UPS directly feeds
input line power to loads via a "through" path. In the event of line power
failure, a DC to AC converter called an inverter activates to feed the loads
using internal batteries as an emergency power source. Because the inverter
is activated only by line power failure, power consumption and resulting
heat dissipation are minimized. In addition, the low component count means
a lower price and smaller size.
2)Line interactive type
This type of UPS is an adjustable voltage version of the constant line feed
type. It contains a line transformer and normally switches its taps according
to line input voltage (up to ±20% fluctuation) to control output voltage
fluctuation within ±10%. The battery's frequency of discharge is reduced
by increasing input voltage tolerance.
3)Constant inverter feed type (online type)
This type of UPS offers the highest power feed quality of the three types.
It constantly regulates output power through the inverter, so output is
unaffected by voltage fluctuations in or noise affecting the line power.
In the event of power failure, it continues power supply with no momentary
interruption. |
